Scrap the ‘Tampon Tax’

Scrap the ‘Tampon Tax’

CALLS to scrap the “tampon tax” have been welcomed by UKIP health spokesman Louise Bours.

The North West MEP has been campaigning for the 5% VAT levy – imposed by the European Union – to be scrapped and gave a speech to the European Parliament in June 2015 addressing this very issue.

Ms Bours spoke out after new Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn adopted UKIP’s policy in calling for the levy to be abolished.

But she pointed out the hurdles that lay ahead due to the EU’s refusal to recognise that female sanitary hygiene products are not a “luxury”.

In her speech to the European Parliament on June 9, Ms Bours explained: “It is not quite difficult, it is nigh on impossible – the UK is subject to EU rules on VAT which forces us to impose a 5% tax on these and many other products.

“There’s nothing anyone can do about it, because only the unelected and unaccountable EU Commission can propose or begin to amend legislation.

“So it doesn’t matter how you vote in elections, you can’t vote for anybody that can actually initiate change to EU law.

“The only way we are going to get rid of this ridiculous tax, is for politicians to start listening to the electorate, decide they will do what is best for their voters, not the ‘project’, and leave the EU.

“Once we leave the EU we can act swiftly, follow in Canada’s footsteps and get rid of this archaic tax on feminine hygiene products.”

On Sunday, she commented further: “I welcome Jeremy Corbyn’s intervention on this subject and I applaud the fact he has adopted a UKIP policy. It’s certainly about time.

“The tampon tax is nothing short of a tax on women. David Cameron clearly doesn’t have a problem with that, but I think he’ll find almost the entire country will disagree with him.”
