Roaming charge cut could cost consumers

Roaming charge cut could cost consumers

Scrapping mobile phone roaming charges for travellers within the European Union will almost certainly lead to higher charges at home, says local UKIP MEP Paul Nuttall.

He was commenting after the European Parliament voted through proposals to regulate roaming charges throughout the EU.

Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader, warned that domestic mobile users would end up footing the bill.

He said: “This will no doubt benefit well-heeled business executives and indeed MEPs travelling to Brussels and Strasbourg.

“But it will almost certainly result in higher costs for domestic users because the phone operators have lost a major revenue stream.

“Like any business, they will seek to recover that loss and the only place to recover it is from domestic prices.

“So we MEPs will get lower prices but most other people will pay more. Yet again we see European regulation delivering unintended consequences.

“We will now have non-roaming customers subsidising roaming customers, increasing costs for the majority who have less money and influence, to cut costs for the minority.

“It’s a bad law and that is why UKIP is opposed to it.”
