Coalition Lords appointments show contempt for democracy

Coalition Lords appointments show contempt for democracy

Dear Editor,

The House of Lords scrutinises Bills that have been passed by the House of Commons so acting as a check, often delaying them for re-consideration or amendments and therefore has an important role.

However, while the Lib-Dems, Labour and the Conservatives have all called for reforms and for a smaller House, the ranks continue to rise as they have continued to appoint their cronies to it in order to control their own agenda.

In the next few weeks another twenty will be added, making the House of Lords larger than the entire European Parliament. Only the National People’s Congress of China is larger.

If the make up of the Upper House was truly representative of the electorate and based upon election results, UKIP should by now have a total of 27 members instead of just three.

This shows that the political establishment are determined to keep the Upper House firmly in their control, treating democracy with contempt in the process.

This is clearly unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue.

Yours faithfully

Philip Griffiths, North West President UKIPĀ
