Cameron Shows True Colours

Dear Editor,

On the Andrew Marr TV show on Sunday, PM David Cameron once and for all showed his true colours with regard to open door immigration with his admittance that the free movement of labour within the EU was an ‘important’ right following his year on year failure to control our borders.

At the last General Election, during the leaders debates, Mr Cameron proudly announced that as Prime Minister, his government would bring net migration down from the ‘hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands’. He has comprehensively failed, with net migration hitting 212,000 in the year to September 2013.

Figures showing that the number of Romanians and Bulgarians now in the UK having reached 200,000, equivalent to a city the size of York, clearly demonstrates that the right to freedom of movement within the EU is to blame. Migration experts at Oxford University have already suggested that immigration from Romania and Bulgaria is up 25% on last year.

David Cameron has postured and played politics on immigration by clamping down on highly skilled workers from fast paced, emerging economies such as Brazil and India whilst we continue to have an open door with nearly 450 million EU citizens.

These promised negotiations with the EU are doomed to fail as freedom of movement is enshrined in the treaties and would need the approval of all 28 member states.

The question I must ask therefore is, why bother with negotiation? Why wait until 2017? David Cameron promised us a referendum back in 2009. Perhaps now, whilst the coalition has no further business before the General Election he should legislate for the referendum now.

Yours faithfully

Paul Nuttall
