The EU and self promotion

The EU and self promotion

Mar 25, 2015

Dear Editor, If there’s one thing that the EU is good at is self promotion – regardless of the facts. You must all have seen their signs: ‘European Union, Investing in your future’ ; ‘EU regional development fund 2007 – 2013’, and ‘This development could not have happened without the EU.’ What everyone should be aware is that the funding is actually part of the rebate from what we pay in – currently £55million every day. We get around half back and then the EU dictate what we spend it on, regardless of if we need it. This is UK taxpayers money spent on whatever is in the EU’s five year plan. David Cameron thinks that he can renegotiate our membership. No chance Yours faithfully,   Philip Griffiths, North West...

Migration numbers underestimated

Migration numbers underestimated

Mar 21, 2015

OBR’s work is NOT fit for purpose on Migration demography says UKIP The UK Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has increased its estimates of net migration by 57% – from 105,000 a year to 165,000. On the income side of Britain’s national accounts, it predicts increased immigration will provide a boost in tax receipts and a fillip for potential output growth. On the expenditure side, the OBR’s stance on how the costs of infrastructure projects and public service provision are affected by its revision of this critical immigration number is unclear. Back in December, Stephen Nickel, one of the leaders of the OBR expressed this view: “One argument said we’re a small island, not much room. On the other hand, of course, there’s masses of room. The urbanised part of Britain occupies less than 10% of the surface area. The urbanised part of Surrey occupies less of Surrey than golf courses.” Commenting on the OBR’s major net migration number revision UKIP’s Migration and Financial Affairs spokesman, Steven Woolfe said: “Far from being an arcane point about economic forecasting, this revision is an admission by the OBR that the net migration numbers that they have been using throughout this parliament have been grossly underestimated. They, like the rest of the country, have been sucker punched by the prime minister’s promise that he would cut UK net migration to ‘tens of thousands’. “The first thing that the Chancellor did when he rose to his feet on Budget day was to praise the OBR’s work. They might do good work in some areas but when it comes assessing the fiscal effects of migration on our national accounts or on the effectiveness of public spending on UK infrastructure projects and public services the OBR’s work is not fit for purpose. “It’s staggering that even when the trend is that immigration into the UK is rising rapidly, it is still the OBR’s official view that the ‘decline in net migration is not so steep’! This stance is both counterproductive, self-deceiving and makes accurate economic forecasting impossible. “Knowing a nation’s demography is essential to any government. Therefore, it is incumbent on all of us to ensure that the body that...
