Hands Off Our Number Plates

Hands Off Our Number Plates

Apr 18, 2014

The EU should keep its hands off our vehicle number plates, says UKIP. “There is nothing wrong with British registration plates and if there were it is up to our government to make any changes,” said deputy leader Paul Nuttall. “This is all part of the EU obsession with harmonisation, which they are determined to impose on everything.” MEPs are to vote next week on the move which will give the EU powers to set a standard design for vehicle registration plates in all EU member states. “This is bound to mean including the dreadful blue and gold ring of stars EU symbol which many people already resent seeing plastered all over our country,” said Mr Nuttall, North West MEP. “The initial idea was to make it simpler for for people to register their vehicle in a different EU country but the parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee is now proposing equipping all vehicles in the member states with number plates in ‘common colours’. “This is exactly how the EU works, the Commission puts forward legislation which may seem relatively innocuous but then it is amended into something far more controlling and intrusive. “It was only after a fight that the law was changed to allow motorists to display the Union Flag, Cross of St George, Scottish Saltire or Welsh dragon on their number plates but this could be overturned by these proposals. “And some motorists have personalised number plates which I suspect would certainly be for the chop under this move. “On a daily basis the EU comes up with more rules and regulations – and more reasons why we must leave,” added Mr...

UKIP Membership Continues To Rise

UKIP Membership Continues To Rise

Apr 2, 2014

April 2,  2014 MEMBERSHIP CONTINUES TO RISE News that UKIP’s membership is continuing to rise, with the party now at an all-time high of 35,081 members, has been welcomed by deputy leader Paul Nuttall. “There is no doubt that UKIP is the biggest story in British politics this year. Our messages and policies are clearly capturing the public imagination and they are joining us in droves. “We have had almost 2,500 new members who have joined so far this year alone and we are on an upward trajectory,” said Mr Nuttall, MEP for the North West. “The other parties would have you believe people aren’t interested in politics anymore but these brilliant new membership figures show just the opposite. “They are disillusioned with the other main parties but see UKIP as a breath of fresh air and one with common sense policies and views. “And it is no longer just Tory votes we are taking but also from the Labour Party and both those parties are very worried about the threat we pose,” he...

Grant Wrong on Booze Tax

Grant Wrong on Booze Tax

Apr 1, 2014

Dear Editor, David Grant, managing director of Moorhouse’s Brewery, is wrong to call for the scrapping of tax relief for brewers who produce less than 3,000 barrels a year. Instead they should be joining forces with breweries of any size to lobby against excessive duty on UK-made beer. Micro-breweries play an important part to play in a marketplace increasingly dominated by multinational breweries by keeping traditional real ale at the forefront of the Great British pub-going experience. I would hate to see the number of micro-breweries fall if important tax relief is axed. Wholesale reform of beer tax is long overdue. The recent budget which saw just a measly one penny of duty cut from a pint of beer does not go far enough, especially when you consider that VAT, at 20%, makes visiting a pub to enjoy a pint of real ale very costly anyway. It is little wonder that more people drink at home. With the future of the British pub at stake, small and medium sized breweries must unite and get behind the pub industry and fight to drastically reduce the tax on UK-made beer.   Yours faithfully   Paul...
