HS2 Must Be Stopped – Phil Griffiths

HS2 Must Be Stopped – Phil Griffiths

Oct 30, 2013

Oct 29  Dear Editor, While the Conservative-led Coalition lays out its latest case for HS2 and the alleged benefits it would bring there are several important issues that they won’t want to mention. First they assure us that the project will stay within budget. Really? It has already increased  from £33billion to £43billion and since when has any major public project stayed within budget? Then there will be the disruption to normal services, the destruction of the countryside, property, farms and people’s lives and much more. And for what? To save a meagre amount of journey time?  Will it really create the thousands of jobs and inflate the economy north of Watford Gap? The one thing for certain that neither the current Government or Labour will admit to is that HS2 was part of two plans drawn up by Jacques Delors in 1993. One was to create the single currency, the other being Trans-European Networks (TENS) to integrate the EU transport and communication systems. There are many cheaper alternatives available at a fraction of the costs that would be of greater benefit to the nation and to everyone who travels by train. Yet again it appears that we must obey the EU at any cost. HS2 must be stopped. Yours faithfully   Philip...

Workington Job Loss Anger

Workington Job Loss Anger

Oct 30, 2013

October 29, 2013 JOB LOSS ANGER Anger over the proposed loss of jobs at three Tata Steel plants including Workington has been expressed by local MEP Paul Nuttall. “It is a tragedy that workers are facing losing their livelihood thanks in no small measure to EU rules and regulations. “It is easy to attack big companies which it comes to axing jobs and there can often be a suspicion that the real reason is not fully disclosed. But I have no doubt that Tata are not trying to shift blame when they talk of EU energy and environment rules being a major factor. “And it comes as no surprise that demands for steel are expected to continue to fall because of the economic conditions,” said Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader. “The energy and environment rules in the UK are at the behest of the EU and are causing hardship at every level of society. The government needs to rise to the challenge and ditch this EU red tape,” he...

Taxpayer Funded HS2 Report A Sham

Taxpayer Funded HS2 Report A Sham

Oct 30, 2013

October 29, 2013 HS2 comments Local Euro-MP Paul Nuttall pointed out today that the latest HS2 report is just another attempt by the government to shore up its losing position. “Initially we were told this project was all about speed, now we are being told it’s about capacity. What they’ll never admit it is that the cost will just keep growing like Topsy,” said Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader. “Meanwhile they keep commissioning taxpayer funded reports to support a losing position, just throwing more money at this vanity project. UKIP is winning the argument against HS2 and it is becoming increasingly apparent that the Government are all over the...

EU Plumbing New Depths

EU Plumbing New Depths

Oct 30, 2013

October 29, 2013 EU PLUMBING NEW DEPTHS The EU has been accused of plumbing new depths in their bonkers efforts to waste taxpayers cash. While householders all over Europe struggle to make ends meet the European Commission has had working groups spending almost three years working out how much water should be used to flush toilets and urinals. “God knows how much that has cost and what a colossal waste of time and effort. These Eurocrats are really taking the pee,” said MEP Paul Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader. “It is particularly ridiculous considering that Commission President President José Manuel Barroso, recently said the EU executive should be ‘big on big things and smaller on smaller things’. “The world is in a financially parlous state and thanks to nonsense EU carbon targets, energy bills are forcing families into fuel poverty. And yet money is being thrown away on efforts to deliver an “Ecolabel” for toilets and urinals. “We used to laugh at their stupid ideas such as discriminating against curvy cucumbers but it really isn’t funny that they continue to come up with hair-brained schemes. “It’s costing every household in Britain about £6,000 a year for our membership of the EU and what do we get in return? More and more rules and regulations tying the hands of businesses resulting in higher costs for consumers. “But don’t worry the EU is organising important research into toilets and producing 60 page technical reports involving tasks including ‘user behaviour’, ‘bad case assessment’ and ‘production definition’. They must really be flushed with success. Is that what they mean by toilet humour,” said Mr Nuttall, North West...

Figures Prove Economic Recovery Missing in North West

Figures Prove Economic Recovery Missing in North West

Oct 22, 2013

Dear Editor, The latest batch of unemployment figures released this week which revealed that the jobless total in the North West has risen by a staggering 24,000 goes to show that this supposed economic recovery is happening in the South and the Midlands but leaving the North further behind. It is no surprise that this region has suffered the most when it comes to public sector cuts, especially when you consider that a higher number of public sector jobs have been lost across many local authorities. However I do not subscribe to the supposed solution called on by TUC Regional Secretary, Lynn Collins, who believes in spending money that we do not have. In order for jobs to be created in the North West, the Government must urgently look into the level of rates they set on businesses in the high street which must be collected by councils. Town centres in places such as Bolton, Wigan and Leigh were once bustling, with high occupancy rates and strong job creation. I would like to see these rates fall so businesses will come back to the high street and create jobs once more. Yours faithfully   Paul...
